Project Description

Further to the traffic delays being experienced at the Coldra interchange and the 2010 Ryder Cup, it has been proposed to reconfigure the interchange to allow for better movements of traffic in the area.

From the modeling of the traffic at the Coldra interchange and to increase the capacity for traffic flow, it is proposed that a new ‘hamburger lane’ underneath the existing M4 viaduct to allow traffic coming from the A449 to gain better access to the M4 westbound on slip will be constructed. There is also provision of new dedicated lane from the M4 westbound offslip to the Newport Southern Distributor Road, and a third lane off the Southern Distributor Road onto the gyratory, will provide increased capacity within the gyratory.  The gyratory will also be widened to four lanes and minor modifications made to the A449 and Chepstow Road approaches. Roadmarkings and new signals will be installed as part of the works.

The works will be subject to the European procurement process, and interested parties will be invited to tender for the works. A select list will be drawn up following assessment of the interest returns, and these companies will be asked to tender for the works. Works will commence in February 2008, and will take 8 months to complete.

Aim of Project / Benefits

The aim of the project is to improve the traffic capacity of the Coldra gyratory in readiness for the 2010 Ryder Cup and to allow for future traffic growths. It is anticipated that the benefits to the local residents will be the elimination of future queues and improve the traffic flows, thus reducing congestion and pollutants.
