Safety improvements for the Usk River bridge
A package of works for the M4 Usk River bridge commences this week on Sunday 10 January 2010 and is programmed to last for 6 weeks. Works should be completed by 22 February 2010 but some aspects of the work are particularly weather dependant. The Usk River bridge is situated to the east of the Brynglas Tunnels and part of the M4 motorway which is the major route into South Wales for traffic providing support to local businesses and the Welsh economy. Included in the package of works is:-
- Renewal of the expansion joints. As part of the works the expansion joints at the hinges on the structure will also be removed and renewed.
- Improvement and renewal of the drainage system.
The South Wales Trunk Road Agency will be managing the works as Agents to the Welsh Assembly Government. The main contractor will be Alun Griffiths Contractors Limited and Capita Symonds, as Consulting Engineer, will supervise the works.
This is a busy section of the motorway and there is likely to be some disruption to road users whilst the works are in progress. Traffic management will be in place to protect the workforce, motorists and control the flow of traffic, and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to road users, businesses and residents.
All traffic lanes will be kept open during busy periods with lane closures and a contraflow system effected at night time only.
