Welsh Government Traffic Officer Service
Who are we?
Following the launch in May 2009 of a trial civilian Traffic Officer Service in North Wales the Deputy First Minister of the Welsh Government also made a commitment to introduce a similar Traffic Officer Service trial in South Wales.
Distinctively liveried Traffic Officers and vehicles are deployed to cover the area of the M4 motorway from the Second Severn Crossing Toll Plaza to J34 Miskin as well as the A470 from J32 Coryton to Abercynon.
The Traffic Officers are trained to a high standard in everything from safety to dealing with customers, traffic management and the use of technology. Where incidents occur, our police colleagues still retain their role in investigating crime, but we are there to help with coordinating the resources of the other emergency services, managing the traffic and re-opening routes as soon as it is safe to do so.
Dispatched from the South Wales Traffic Management Centre we work with Traffic Wales to keep the public informed through use of the electronic message signs and by supplying information for local travel reports.
We are there to help you if you breakdown or are involved in a collision or incident.
We also remove damaged and abandoned vehicles and clear debris from the carriageways.
We provide mobile and temporary road closures and also support the police in their duties.
We patrol the network in distinctively liveried vehicles marked as traffic officers with high visibility markings.
